'New Growth'
2021
20.3 x 27.9 cm
Embroidery and textile collage on cardboard.
This artwork illustrates the concept of rewriting history, placing black people in the forefront. For centuries historical portraits featured only white subjects and afros were not seen as appropriate or associated with any kind of regality. This work was influenced by Kehinde Wiley’s use of appropriation and appropriated the portrait ‘Seated woman’ by Antonie Watteau which depicts a woman with Eurocentric characteristics in a position of elegance. I created this work with embroidery, using cloths from both Caribbean and African culture and leaves and vines symbolizing this rewriting and new perspective.

This project responds to a brief which looks at the role of image making in society and culture. I created an outcome in response to an exploration practices of storytelling and folklore specifically from an Afro Caribbean perspective.

Key objectives of this project:
- Create a tangible narrative that illustrates the history of Caribbean culture through a folkloric structure.
- Have social engagement be a principal aspect of my final outcome.

And necks close to rolling off glistening bodies bathed in the limelight

This bashment won’t be featured on page 2.
In my exploration of storytelling and folklore I made connections between Africa and it's diaspora through textile (a tangible aspect of culture that was taken from us due to enslavement). I used Decentralised Storytelling

This artwork was created in response to a brief which required an expansion of our interpretation of image into experience and performance, exploring the body and collections of bodies.
My approach to this brief was to explore the musical genre Dancehall and its role as a catalyst for female agency and liberation.

I took influence from the typography and the visuals of hand painted Jamaican Dancehall posters during the era of sound system culture (1950s-80s) and explored how dancehall queens and female artists critiqued the patriarchy through lewd and erotic lyricism within the dancehall sphere.
